Repotting insect-eating plants like Venus Fly Traps is a rare practice due to their small, non-invasive root system. We recommend repotting your carnivorous plant every four years, with the next sized pot. You can also repot multiple different species of carnivorous plants (like Sarracenia or Monkey Traps) in one pot using this potting mix.
Yes! Repotting these plants during the colder months of the year is safe practice & doesn't increase the likelihood of transplant shock or root rot (compared to transplanting in spring or summer).
Using our potting mix will reduce the risk of drought (& therefore death) as dehydration is the most common way to kill a carnivorous plant. This mix will also be perfectly suited for self-watering or semi-hydroponic set-ups, too.
As Carnivorous Plants must be kept in constantly wet soil, they'll need watering both before and after repotting. Don't worry about over-watering or root rot as they are adapted to grow only in partially waterlogged conditions.
The whole reason why your Venus Fly Trap or Pitcher Plant doesn't like regular fertilisers (like BabyBio or Miracle-Gro) is because they naturally grow in nutrient-deficient soils. Therefore, they have evolved to get their 'food' via other means by catching insects & digesting their insides. Make sure your Carnivorous Plant is kept in the sunniest window in the house as the sunlight will also help keep it strong and healthy.
Most insect-eating plants like the Venus Fly Trap will need a resting period in the colder weather. During this time, they might develop yellow or brown leaves, along with dying 'traps'. Don't discard the plant and instead keep it in the sunniest, but coldest area of your house. You can also keep them outside (24hrs a day) during the winter to help them serve their dormancy periods. By spring, your plant will begin to regrow and eventually look great again!
This is most likely due to dry air or sudden dehydration. Remember, these plants need reliable soil moisture to do well, so you can always keep them submerged in 2cm of water at all times. To go the extra mile, why not keep your Venus Fly Trap or Pitcher Plant outside (still submerged with water) to help them recover. The only plant that doesn't like to be submerged is the Monkey Trap Plant (Nepenthes).
It's best to keep the lid of the potting mix slightly ajar by around 20% to help it have aeration while in storage. The best place to store the potting mix is in a cool, dark shelf or cabinet until you need it next.
