Meet The Soil Ingredients:

  • Coconut Coir BaseA pest-free foundation for your new potting mix that's 100% traceable to its source, unlike other potting mixes that are made from green waste which carries flies, weeds and mushrooms.
  • Perlite: This fine-grade perlite will act like small structural 'pillars' that'll promote better aeration within the potting mix to prevent root rot & compaction. This is very important for this group of houseplant due to their delicate root systems.
  • Bark: The mix includes natural bark fragments (0.5-1.5cm) to enhance soil structure, providing excellent aeration and drainage to prevent waterlogged roots. The bark will also help the acidity in the soil which results in better nutrient uptake in your plant.
  • Sand: Improves and controls the soil moisture levels within the potting mix, helping prevent common Fern issues like dehydration (& therefore crispy or dying foliage!).
  • Enriched with Worm Castings: Organic worm castings infuse the soil with essential nutrients, supporting healthy, vigorous growth for lush, thriving Ferns.

Key Features:

✅ Enriched with Worm Castings: Organic worm castings infuse the soil with essential nutrients, supporting healthy, vigorous growth for lush, thriving ferns.

✅ Moisture Retention with Protection: Carefully balanced to hold moisture effectively while reducing the risk of root rot, ensuring your ferns stay hydrated without the dangers of anaerobic soil conditions.

✅ Crafted in the UK: Made in the UK with a focus on quality and sustainability, this potting mix reflects the expertise of local craftsmanship.

✅ Vegan, peat-free & no animal cruelty.

✅ Once opened, it'll remain fresh for at least twelve months when stored in a dry, cool cabinet/shelf.

Benefits:

Promotes Healthy Fern Growth: The combination of bark, sand, and worm castings creates an ideal environment for fern roots to expand and thrive, ensuring long-term plant health in both the roots and foliage.

Reduces Dehydration Risk: The mix is specifically designed to retain moisture, preventing the dry-out conditions that can harm ferns, while still maintaining a well-drained soil to protect against root rot.

Versatile for ALL Indoor Fern Varieties: Suitable for a wide range of indoor ferns, this potting mix adapts to the needs of different species, from delicate to robust varieties.

FAQs

How Often Do I Need To Repot My Indoor Fern?

We recommend to repot your houseplant once every three years, using a fresh batch of potting mix with the next sized pot. The only time that you may need to repot more often is if your plant is suffering from root rot.

What Does 'Bio-Active Mean'?

Selecting the bio-active selection incorporates both Worm Castings and Biochar, which both will help with the overall health of your new potting mix. The soil will promote a better relationship with the root system, which in turn will aid the plant’s wellbeing, photosynthesis and ability to deal with pests/diseases like root rot!

Can I Repot My Indoor Fern in the Autumn or Winter?

Yes! Repotting Indoor Ferns (Maidenhair Ferns, Boston Ferns, etc) during the colder months of the year is safe practice & doesn't increase the likelihood of transplant shock or root rot (compared to transplanting in spring or summer).

Will Repotting My Indoor Fern Help with Stopping Its Leaves from Becoming Crispy/Brown?

Repotting will definitely help with dehydration-related issues like crispy foliage. Ensure that when you do come around to repotting your Fern, you're very gentle with the root system to prevent 'transplant shock', which is usually the result of its root system being heavily handled.

Should I Water My Indoor Fern Before or After Repotting?

We always recommend watering your houseplant around 12 hours before potting so that the plant is hydrated and strong enough for its repot. If you forget to water beforehand, it's not the end of the world as long as you're very gentle with the root system. It's also advised to wait two days before giving the plant another water again, just so it gives enough time for your plant to settle into its new home.

How to Store This Potting Mix

It's best to keep the lid of the potting mix slightly ajar by around 20% to help it have aeration while in storage. The best place to store the potting mix is in a cool, dark shelf or cabinet until you need it next.

Due to the weight difference when containing water, most soil are measured by the volume. Most companies (like ourselves) will go down the route of Litres, with only a few using other methods like the size of their bags/sacks. We use Litres to help the customer visually imagine the amount that they'll receive!
Any good potting mix will only hold a certain volume of water before dripping the excess through the drainage holes. You're most likely going to cause root rot by watering the plant too often instead of the exact amount of water per drink.

Here's an example, it's far better to water the plant 7L in one go once a week, as supposed to 1L per day for the entire week. The roots won't be able to access the oxygen within the soil, which is critical for reducing the development of root rot. Like bubbles in an ocean, the air will rise when the potting mix is wet, so it's essential to allow the soil to dry slightly between drinks to regain the oxygen.
