Key Features:

  • Fungus Gnat Free Composition: Grow your houseplant with confidence, knowing there will be no flies or insects in the mix when it arrives! We store our potting mixes for two weeks before confirming they are bug free.
  • Bark & Perlite: Pine bark fragments (1-2cm) are important for Ficus as it'll help with keeping the soil slightly acidic (ideal for maximum nutrient uptake). The perlite will act like small structural 'pillars' that'll promote better aeration within the potting mix to prevent root rot & compaction. This is very important for this group of houseplant due to their delicate root systems.
  • Vermiculite: Encourages a more reliable level of soil moisture to help the root system grow, along with the added benefit of keeping the soil slightly warmer to promote quicker growth rates throughout the year.
  • Sand & Grit: A balanced amount of fine-graded sand to promote optimum drainage, while providing substance for its root system to interact and grow through. Our sand composition will also help downplay the risk of dehydration and drought-related plant damage to its foliage.
  • (Optional) Enriched with Worm Castings: Organic worm castings enhance soil fertility and encourage microbial activity, promoting healthy root development and boosting overall plant vitality. This is the secret ingredient to a happy indoor Ficus. You will never have worms in the soil, just their doorless castings that cannot be seen from the naked eye.
  • Reduces Environmental Shock: Formulated to help mitigate abiotic (environmental) stress, this mix provides a stable and nutrient-rich environment, helping these plants adapt to indoor conditions with reduced risk of shock.
  • Crafted in the UK: Proudly made in the UK with a focus on quality and sustainability, this potting mix reflects the expertise of local craftsmanship, ensuring your Ficus receives the best possible care.
  • The potting mix has a pH Balance of 6.4.
  • Once opened, it'll remain fresh for at least twelve months when stored in a dry, cool cabinet/shelf.

FAQs

How Often Do I Need To Repot My Cactus or Succulent?

We recommend to repot your desert dweller once every three years, using a fresh batch of potting mix with the next sized pot. The only time that you may need to repot more often is if your plant is suffering from root rot. (Read the fourth question)

What Does 'Bio-Active Mean'?

Selecting the bio-active selection incorporates both Worm Castings and Biochar, which both will help with the overall health of your new potting mix. The soil will promote a better relationship with the root system, which in turn will aid the plant’s wellbeing, photosynthesis and ability to deal with pests/diseases like root rot!

Can I Repot Cacti & Succulents in the Autumn or Winter?

Yes! Repotting these plants during the colder months of the year is safe practice & doesn't increase the likelihood of transplant shock or root rot (compared to transplanting in spring or summer).

Is This Potting Mix Suitable for a Cactus or Succulent with Root Rot?

Yes! So, it's advised to repot your plant as soon as symptoms of root rot arises. Symptoms for Cacti include a wilting stem, yellowed stem and a mushy stem. Symptoms for Succulents with root rot include rapidly yellowing leaves, sprinkled leaves and potential soil mould. Any Cactus or Succulent grown more than 1.5m from a window is most likely to develop root rot. We recommend to take the plant from the pot and scan the outer edge of the potting mix. Root rot will look like brown, flat/deflated and can easily be pulled off from the soil (with little difficulty). There could be a slight 'earthy' smell to the soil, too. Healthy roots should be cream, light-brown or red in colour and will feel twig-like when lightly pinched. Follow the next steps to repotting your root rotted plant with one of the options;

Option 1: If more less than 20% of the roots have rotten, remove the dead roots with scissors and replant it back into its original pot, using fresh new this compost.
Option 2: If roughly between 20% - 80% of the roots have rotten, We recommend removing the dead roots and repot into a smaller pot. One that is around 3-5cm smaller in diameter is best, along with using this potting mix.
Option 3: If more than 80% of the roots have rotten, it's recommended to take stem cuttings and root them in either water or soil to 'restart' the root system.

Should I Water Cacti & Succulents Before or After Repotting?

We always recommend watering your houseplant around 12 hours before potting so that the plant is hydrated and strong enough for its repot. If you forget to water beforehand, it's not the end of the world as long as you're very gentle with the root system. It's also advised to wait two days before giving the plant another water again, just so it gives enough time for your plant to settle into its new home.

How to Store This Potting Mix

It's best to keep the lid of the potting mix slightly ajar by around 20% to help it have aeration while in storage. The best place to store the potting mix is in a cool, dark shelf or cabinet until you need it next.

Is This Potting Mix Suitable for Cuttings and Sowing Cacti/Succulent Seeds?

Yes. You can use this potting mix to pot-up unrooted or already-rooted cuttings via propagation. You can also use this potting mix to sow seeds too, as this product's sand profile will help enable germination and solid root development during the early stages of seedhood.

We're here to help if you're still unsure with what compost is best suited for your plant. Send us a message with the name of your plant and we'll point you in the right direction! 😊
This product comprises individually-sourced components to create our quality potting mix. Its sustainable, basal component (coconut coir) is peat-free sourced from a well-established company in southern England that comply with strict production regulations in the U.K.. We then quality check & combine with the suitable ingredients to improve the overall soil structure and replicate the ecological habitats of temperate and tropical climates.

All our products include recyclable packaging/materials, with deliveries made to the local Post Office/Royal Mail Sorting Office or parcel depot via our fully-electric vehicle.

  • Ensure the new pot has drainage holes in its bottom. No matter how good a compost is, you're always running the risk of root rot if water begins to accumulate in the pot's base. Struggling with the suitable pot? Why not buy our 'Cactus & Succulent Repotting Kit' that includes the compost, a plastic pot of your chosen size and a complimentary bottle of Baby Bio. From £14.99 with free delivery.
  • Respect the roots. 'Transplant Shock' is a common issue among heavy-handed transplants, so always be delicate and try not to over-touch the roots or pull soil from them. You can always book a 1-1 Video Call with Joe Bagley if you're worried about transplantation. He'd be delighted to speak to you!
  • Fill the new pot a fifth-deep with the new potting mix. Sit the plant on top of the mix and fill the gap between the pot and roots. Instead of patting down the compost for support, simply give the plant a thorough soak with water to consolidate its new soil. Wait until the drainage holes finish dripping water before placing it in your decorative pot. Job well done!
All of our composts come in a resealable bag, so never worry about having a little extra left over. Simply enclose the lid and situate it in a dry, dark area away from pets and children. The soil's freshness will last at least twelve months once opened, so it's great for emergency repotting and top-ups.
Due to the weight difference when containing water, most soil are measured by the volume. Most companies (like ourselves) will go down the route of Litres, with only a few using other methods like the size of their bags/sacks. We use Litres to help the customer visually imagine the amount that they'll receive!
Unfortunately, our handcrafted composts are only available to those in the U.K., due to E.U. trading laws on plant-based materials. However, if you are in the U.K., expect free delivery and postage within five days of purchase!
Yes! We're happy to say that all of our compost-products are peat-free and sustainably sourced to preserve the natural environment in the U.K..

For the last five years, we have been formulating composts for our houseplants, balancing the critical ingredients for different groups (Bonsai, Bulbs, Cacti, Tropicals, etc.), with varying ratios of coconut coir, perlite, grit & sand. We believe that a well-structured soil is critical for maximising both the root and foliar growth performance. We source the compost from well-respected companies in the U.K., which has tight restrictions over quality control & environmental regulations/promises.
Any good compost will only hold a certain volume of water before dripping the excess through the drainage holes. With this in mind, you're most likely going to cause root rot by watering the plant too often instead of the exact amount of water per drink.

Here's an example. It's far better to water the plant 7L in one go once a week, as supposed to 1L per day for the entire week. The roots won't be able to access the oxygen within the soil, which is critical for reducing the development of root rot. Like bubbles in an ocean, the air will rise when the potting mix is wet, so it's essential to allow the soil to dry slightly between drinks to regain the oxygen.

Our Repotting Kits are designed to maximise both the air circulation and soil structure around your plant's roots, meaning that it'll have the very best conditions for optimal growth. Remember not to water the soil too frequently, and your little friend will very much enjoy his new home!
