Background Information

For the last five years, we have been formulating composts for our houseplants, balancing the critical ingredients for different groups (Bonsai, Bulbs, Cacti, Tropicals, etc.), with varying ratios of compost, perlite, grit & sand. We believe that a well-structured soil is critical for maximising both the root and foliar growth performance. We source the compost from well-respected companies in the U.K., which has tight restrictions over quality control & environmental regulations/promises.

Checklist for a Successful Repotting:

  • Ensure the new pot has drainage holes in its bottom. No matter how good a compost is, you're always running the risk of root rot if water begins to accumulate in the pot's base. Struggling with the suitable pot? Why not buy our Houseplant Repotting Kit that includes the compost, a plastic pot of your chosen size and a complimentary bottle of Baby Bio. From £17.99 with free delivery.
  • Respect the roots. 'Transplant Shock' is a common issue among heavy-handed transplants, so always be delicate and try not to over-touch the roots or pull soil from them. You can always book a 1-1 Video Call with Joe Bagley if you're worried about transplantation.
  • Fill the new pot a fifth-deep with the new potting mix. Sit the plant on top of the mix and fill the gap between the pot and roots. Instead of patting down the compost for support, simply give the plant a thorough soak with water to consolidate its new soil. Wait until the drainage holes finish dripping water before placing it in your decorative pot. Job well done!

Seed Sowing

  1. Fill a 7cm plastic pot with your Indoor Herb compost and water it thoroughly. It's best to do this outside to avoid spilling compost-water everywhere!
  2. Re-spread the compost to flatten it out and spread the seeds across, making sure they have at least a 4mm gap between them.
  3. Sprinkle the vermiculite that we've sent over the soil to lock-in the moisture and place the pot(s) on a north or east-facing windowsill away from radiators. Keep the soil continuously moist and wait for new growth to emerge!

Through experience and research, we have developed a fine-tuned sense of how well-structured compost should look and feel. Along with using quality ingredients, we source the compost from a widely-known company to the Horticultural Industry, based in Southern England. We have studied hundreds of species' basal structures to ensure the formulated compost is complimentary to the individual plant, whether it has a rhizomatous, tuberous, cormous or the traditional root system.
All of our composts come in a resealable bag, so never worry about having a little extra left over. Simply enclose the lid and situate it in a dry, dark area away from pets and children. The soil's freshness will last at least twelve months once opened, so it's great for emergency repotting and top-ups.
Unfortunately, our handcrafted composts are only available to those in the U.K., due to E.U. trading laws on plant-based materials. However, if you are in the U.K., expect free delivery and postage within three days of purchase!
Any good compost will only hold a certain volume of water before dripping the excess through the drainage holes. With this in mind, you're most likely going to cause root rot by watering the plant too often instead of the exact amount of water per drink.

Here's an example. It's far better to water the plant 7L in one go once a week, as supposed to 1L per day for the entire week. The roots won't be able to access the oxygen within the soil, which is critical for reducing the development of root rot. Like bubbles in an ocean, the air will rise when the potting mix is wet, so it's essential to allow the soil to dry slightly between drinks to regain the oxygen.

Our Repotting Kits are designed to maximise both the air circulation and soil structure around your plant's roots, meaning that it'll have the very best conditions for optimal growth. Remember not to water the soil too frequently, and your little friend will very much enjoy his new home!

We'll send you a confirmation email with the purchase's receipt, along with a Step-by-Step Guide on repotting/sowing the seeds. You can then refer to the guide once your compost arrives! 😊
