Information

Over time, your Orchid Bark may begin to degrade, gradually losing the ability to hold vital nutrients to support a growing specimen. Why not give your green friend a new lease of life with our peat-free, sustainably-sourced Orchid Bark?

Mix 1

Mix 1 contains just medium-grade bark to encourage better air flow within the rootball and pot itself. The average diameter of a Mix 1 bark fragment is 2cm, which will allow small air pockets to harvest oxygen for the roots to benefit from.

This Mix is Great for:

  • Moth Orchids - Phalaenopsis (Common Superrmarket/Garden Centre Orchids)
  • Paphiopedilums (Slipper Orchids)
  • Phragmipediums
  • Vanilla Orchids
  • Epidendrums

Mix 2

The second mix comprises a perfect blend of Coir, Perlite, Bark & Vermiculite to aid further growth to all other Orchids like Dendrobiums, Cambria, Oncidiums, etc. This group of Orchids prefer to have 40% bark, with 50% Coconut Coir base, and 10% perlite. If you'd like to have a slightly different balance made for a specific Orchid of yours, write this in the "Delivery Note to Us" section above!

This Mix is Great for:

  • Bulbophyllum
  • Cattleya
  • Dendrobium
  • Dracula
  • Jewel Orchids (Ludisia discolor, Anoectochilus, Macodes petola)
  • Masdevallia
  • Maxillaria

Background Information

For the last six years, we have been formulating composts for our houseplants, balancing the critical ingredients for different groups (Bonsai, Bulbs, Cacti, Tropicals, etc.), with varying ratios of compost, perlite, grit & sand. We believe that a well-structured soil is critical for maximising both the root and foliar growth performance. We source the compost from well-respected companies in the U.K., which has tight restrictions over quality control & environmental regulations/promises.

Checklist for a Successful Repotting:

  • Ensure the new pot has drainage holes in its bottom. No matter how good a compost is, you're always running the risk of root rot if water begins to accumulate in the pot's base. Struggling with the suitable pot? Why not buy our Orchid Repotting Kit that includes the bark, a plastic pot of your chosen size and a complimentary bottle of Baby Bio. From £14.95 with free delivery.
  • Respect the roots. 'Transplant Shock' is a common issue among heavy-handed transplants, so always be delicate and try not to over-touch the roots or pull soil from them. You can always book a 1-1 Video Call with Joe Bagley if you're worried about transplantation.
  • Prune away brown or rotten roots with a clean pair of scissors, treating the plant with care throughout. Although it's normal for a houseplant to have a few rotten roots, those that have lost more than half to the disease should be kept on the drier side to life to avoid the situation worsening. Provide a brighter location, and always look out for standing water beneath its pot!

This product comprises individually-sourced components to create our quality potting mix. Its basal component, the peat-free bark fragments, is sourced by a well-established company in southern England that complies with strict garden waste management and production regulations.

All our products include recyclable packaging/materials, with deliveries made to the local Post Office or parcel depot via fully-electric transport. Our commitment is to provide good quality potting mixes to customers without causing harm to the local and wider environment.
All of our composts come in a resealable bag, so never worry about having a little extra left over. Simply enclose the lid and situate it in a dry, dark area away from pets and children. The soil's freshness will last at least twelve months once opened, so it's great for emergency repotting and top-ups.
Unfortunately, our handcrafted composts are only available to those in the U.K., due to E.U. trading laws on plant-based materials. However, if you are in the U.K., expect free delivery and postage within three days of purchase!

Any good compost will only hold a certain volume of water before dripping the excess through the drainage holes. With this in mind, you're most likely going to cause root rot by watering the plant too often instead of the exact amount of water per drink.

Here's an example. It's far better to water the plant 7L in one go once a week, as supposed to 1L per day for the entire week. The roots won't be able to access the oxygen within the soil, which is critical for reducing the development of root rot. Like bubbles in an ocean, the air will rise when the potting mix is wet, so it's essential to allow the soil to dry slightly between drinks to regain the oxygen.

Our Repotting Kits are designed to maximise both the air circulation and soil structure around your plant's roots, meaning that it'll have the very best conditions for optimal growth. Remember not to water the soil too frequently, and your little friend will very much enjoy his new home!

We'll send you a confirmation email with the purchase's receipt, along with a Step-by-Step Guide on repotting/sowing the seeds. You can then refer to the guide once your compost arrives! 😊
