Meet The Soil Ingredients:

  • Coconut Coir Base: A pest-free foundation for your new potting mix that's 100% traceable to its source, unlike other potting mixes that are made from green waste which carries flies, weeds and mushrooms.
  • Perlite: The perlite will act like small structural 'pillars' that'll promote better aeration within the potting mix to prevent root rot & compaction. This is very important for these plants due to their delicate root systems.
  • BarkPine bark fragments (1-2cm) are important for Crotons as it'll help with keeping the soil slightly acidic (ideal for maximum nutrient uptake).
  • Vermiculite: Encourages a more reliable level of soil moisture to help the root system grow, along with the added benefit of keeping the soil slightly warmer to promote quicker growth rates throughout the year.
  • Sand & GritA balanced amount of fine-graded sand to promote optimum drainage, while providing substance for its root system to interact and grow through. Our sand composition will also help downplay the risk of dehydration and drought-related plant damage to its foliage.
  • Organic Worm Castings: This element augments the soil fertility and encourages microbial activity, promoting healthy root development and boosting overall plant vitality. This is the secret ingredient to a happy indoor Croton. You will never have worms in the soil, just their odourless castings that cannot be seen from the naked eye

FAQs

How Often Do I Need To Repot My Croton?

We recommend to transplant your Croton every three years into the next sized pot with this potting mix. The only time that you may need to repot more often is if your plant is suffering from root rot. (Read the fifth question)

What Does 'Bio-Active Mean'?

Selecting the bio-active selection incorporates both Worm Castings and Biochar, which both will help with the overall health of your new potting mix. The soil will promote a better relationship with the root system, which in turn will aid the plant’s wellbeing, photosynthesis and ability to deal with pests/diseases like root rot!

Can I Repot My Croton in the Autumn or Winter?

Yes! There are no issues in terms of affecting your Croton's health by repotting during the autumn or winter.

Will Repotting My Croton Help with It Constantly Losing/Dropping Leaves?

Leaf loss on a Croton is either root rot or insufficient amount of light. The latter is rather easy to fix as all that's needed is to relocate the plant closer to a window. A good note to point out is that the plant can grow well in partial sunlight, so north, east or west-facing windows are ideal for Crotons. If, however, your plant continues to lose its leaves, there could be a chance that root rot is at play. Read the next paragraph to learn more about how to address this issue.

Is This Potting Mix Suitable for a Croton with Root Rot?

Yes! So, it's advised to repot your plant as soon as symptoms of root rot arises. Common symptoms could be rapidly yellowing leaves, browned new leaves that don't emerge successfully, and/or potential soil mould. Crotons grown more than 3m from a window are most likely to develop root rot, which can have symptoms of sudden leaf-loss, too. We recommend to take the plant from the pot and scan the outer edge of the potting mix. Root rot will look like brown, flat/deflated and can easily be pulled off from the soil (with little difficulty). There could be a slight 'earthy' smell to the soil, too. Healthy roots will be cream, light-brown or red in colour and will feel twig-like when lightly pinched. Follow the next steps to repotting your root rotted Croton with one of the options;

Option 1: If more less than 20% of the roots have rotten, remove the dead roots with scissors and replant it back into its original pot, using fresh new this compost.
Option 2: If roughly between 20% - 80% of the roots have rotten, We recommend removing the dead roots and repot into a smaller pot. One that is around 3-5cm smaller in diameter is best, along with using this potting mix.
Option 3: If more than 80% of the roots have rotten, it's recommended to take stem cuttings and root them in either water or soil to 'restart' the root system.

Should I Water My Crotons Before or After Repotting?

We always recommend watering your houseplant around 12 hours before potting so that the plant is hydrated and strong enough for its repot. If you forget to water beforehand, it's not the end of the world as long as you're very gentle with the root system. It's also advised to wait two days before giving the plant another water again, just so it gives enough time for your plant to settle into its new home.

How to Store This Potting Mix

It's best to keep the lid of the potting mix slightly ajar by around 20% to help it have aeration while in storage. The best place to store the potting mix is in a cool, dark shelf or cabinet until you need it next.

Is This Potting Mix Suitable for Croton Cuttings?

Yes. You can use this potting mix to pot-up unrooted or already-rooted cuttings via propagation.

Due to the weight difference when containing water, most soil are measured by the volume. Most companies (like ourselves) will go down the route of Litres, with only a few using other methods like the size of their bags/sacks. We use Litres to help the customer visually imagine the amount that they'll receive!
Any good potting mix will only hold a certain volume of water before dripping the excess through the drainage holes. You're most likely going to cause root rot by watering the plant too often instead of the exact amount of water per drink.

Here's an example, it's far better to water the plant 7L in one go once a week, as supposed to 1L per day for the entire week. The roots won't be able to access the oxygen within the soil, which is critical for reducing the development of root rot. Like bubbles in an ocean, the air will rise when the potting mix is wet, so it's essential to allow the soil to dry slightly between drinks to regain the oxygen.

Our Repotting Kits are designed to maximise both the air circulation and soil structure around your plant's roots, meaning that it'll have the very best conditions for optimal growth. Remember not to water the soil too frequently, and your little friend will very much enjoy his new home!
